Summer School - Sears Point Regional (7/8/2002)
Perfect weather and a beautiful setting combined for a pleasant weekend of learning both on and off the track as Scottracing journeyed to Norther California for an SCCA regional race at Sears Point Raceway near SOnoma, CA. We are fortunate to have hooked up with Hammerhead racing who transported our car and all the supporting equipment in hteir car transporter. All we have to do is arrive, prep the car and drive.
The track is 2.52 miles with signifcant elevation change and many blind areas that provided som unique challenges as Carl had to learn the track and not depend on seeing several turns ahead. He quickly mastered the challenge and qualified second to the nr 74 of Bryant, another Phoenix driver. In the race, Carl was running laps a little quicker than Bryant, but having to start deep in the field he was not able to mount a significant challenge until about lap 8 when he finally got him in sight. Unfortunately, a peice of inferior Brithish engineering in the shift linkage coame undone and Carl had to pit for repairs. Quick support from Hammerhead had the linkage repaired and Carl bakc in the fray, but down too far to mount a challenge to win. His second place was taken away after the fact as we lwearned that you cannot perform repairs in the paddock, only the hot pit. A two lap penalty and a third place finish.
On Sunday, we ran the contingency race and placed first, but Bryant had packed up making it a hollow victory.
How big is it? See for yourself as Carl leads a Formula Mazada down the Carousel at mid course.
