Five fifth in seven and Skusa Irwindale (6/3/2001)
Region Seven Championship Series wrapped up the six race season at Adams Kart Track in Riverside Ca with Scott Racing driver Carl pulling off enough points to lock in fifth place for the season. This in spite of two DNF and racing on the road. Qualifying seventh at Adams with a solid time just .5 seconds off the pole, Carl was punted in the first heat on the first lap in the small Monza and started last in the main. Having finally gotten a hold on the track and with a gear more suited for Willow kart track, Carl roared towards the front, jumping a couple places at the start and then whittled away at the pack until he was running a solid fifth. Eric Humphreys, 33c, had checked out at the front, running 43.5 laps, but the 2 through 4th pack was in site and turning 43.8 to Carl's 43.7. With Wade Van Hoosier struggling to keep up in fourth place, it looked like there was a chance for some more points with 5 laps of the 20 lap race left. Then disaster struck as Carl coasted out of the small Monza with the drive sprocket no longer driving. Our first mechanical DNF of the year could not have come at a worse time as # 95 unlapped himself and pushed Carl down to 10th which was just enough to hold on to 5th in the region. However, the fourth place spot could have put him second for the year, but that's racing.
SKUSA Mission region visited the Irwindale Speedway the week before the IKF race with a good turnout of Juniors on a marginal weather day. The temporary track proved to be challenging for the Juniors in the wet, but Carl was able to qualify well. Starting 5th in the main, he moved up to duel with fellow Phoenix driver Chris Spritzer (7p) for second place. Unfortunately, he could not make his passes for second place stick as the gearing was too tall for the track and advantages in the infield were wiped out in the straight. Great racing, however, as the two Phoenicians drove side by side, sprint card sliding into the fast corners and showing a lot of maturity and respect for the concrete walls and each other.
The team celebrates in the Irwindale Nascar victory circle, showing off the trophy and our new Tiger karts sponsor logo.
